Your Month By Month Fishing Guide- Click Here LEARN ABOUT ICE ROADS -Click Here YOUR NEXT BITE SCHOOLS - Click Here April - Walleyes on Green Bay Aug - Musky on Leech Lake Oct - Musky on Green Bay 03-10-10 Well, back from Iowa. Another great Ice Roads event is in the books. All participants got to experience a world class fishery on Okoboji and all caught some massive sized Bluegills for their efforts. It was a great time and we can not wait until next year. Mark you calendars for the second weekend of March, 2011 for a school dedicated to helping you catch more and bigger Crappies. Again, this school will be held on a premier body of water(s) for the species we will be targeting!! Around here, lots has changed in the past week due to the high temps we have had over the past few days and now rain here the next few. From this, Lake Trout season is done. The approaches around Bayfield and Redcliff are pretty rough and the ice is starting to candle already. No need to take a chance over this deep water. But, a person is still able to walk on, and fish nearshore in these areas. Melt is good to turn on the fish and a person may be able to get into some good brown, splake, and whitefish close to shore. With talk of weakening ice and eroding shorelines, safety must be touched on again. Just like first ice, take all precautions necessary to be safe on the ice. Lifejackets, ice picks, chisels, throw ropes, a buddy, etc etc. Be overly cautious, as late ice is the worst ice, even though the fishing is good. The areas with the best bites going for late ice will be; Rivermouth areas, Second Landing and the bay itself. Look for steelhead, coho, splake and browns to push shallow near Rivermouths right now. Setline and jigging techniques will work from 2 feet of water out to 30. Near Second Landing perch and walleyes are the main target with some pike thrown in as well. Fish will be pushing shallow, east and west of the landing. Moving and drilling holes until finding active fish is the name of the game. And in the bay, fishing will still remain steady and a bit better then mid-winter. Lots of smelt around and with them will be predators. From the coal dock out to the lighthouse. Check structure in the bay for active fish too. Inland waters it is all about panfish now!! Bluegills to crappies to perch, and the action can be fast and furious. Namekagon, Delta, Pike Lake Chain, Gogebic, Clam (lower and upper) are all good bets to get some great late ice panfishing done. On clear water lakes, look for fish to be pushing shallow as the water starts creeping through the ice and in stained water, check the basins still. Run and gun, drill lots of holes and use bigger search lures to find the active (biters) pods of fish. A great time to get kids out and introduce them to the sport of ice fishing. And to look to the near future here folks, I want everyone to know that I have been booking trips the past few weeks for the open water season. With April closing in, our nearshore trolling bite will be in full swing shortly. Big browns, splake, steelhead and salmon are our main early season catches. But, we also offer limited trips for Monster Ice Out Lake Trout as well. Give a call or e-mail to book your first open water trip of the season.
